As you can see I have a new layout for the blog.
The title of the studio goes back about 3 yrs. & comes from a story I'm still working on, & is part of the Dignan Clann history and the "ord na scine duibhe "(more about that one of these days).
Not to worry though, I'm still fully medicated ( :P ) and doodling at the kitchen table.

Still working on that "master" study. Pretty hard going as it was penciled about 2-21/2 yrs ago.Some how I got side tracked (easy for me) & it was tossed in a clothes draw, not too bad you say.. well after all that time & being laid out in "4H" pencil, things get blurred ,erased, etc.
"So why not print out a copy & go from there" you say. Well "1" I be one of them " po" artist, no printer, no scanner, and "2" where would the challenge be in that!!, so Im sure you'll see some misinterpretations,some slight changes( intentional.. hey this gots to be fun too).
Will do a straight up pen & ink piece just to keep you folks interested, & give my eyes a much needed break from all them dots!. So stay tuned , will post as soon as it's done, maybe one, two days at most,

One of my pens died(aaaaaaaarrrrgggh!). So soaking the remaining ones to get them ready for the next piece

I destroy pieces if they been around too long, sell low & give tons away.

Just a few updates to tie you folk over till I get some art done.

My son the Marine just got his first ink, The Irish spelling of our name.

A few Marines "1st squad" had a t-shirt made from one of my designs honoring these fine Marines, couldn't ask for a better honor, my humble thanks men>
Another happy note, my son re-upped,now if Uncle Sam will let me back in.. yep still try-n :(
Will be stationed mainland..he's dreading my visit...for those that don't know me..I'm straight up military..so a military base is like a candy shop,weapons drills, dam!!
Got some nasty e-mails regarding my My-Space look.. well we all know I'm not one of them thar politically correct weiners..
Met a lovely woman that stopped in on this here blog,Ms.Hope joined up with her blog: stop in : give her a shout,join-up
it's one fun read that pulls no punches,&does right by our men & women in the service of our country.

stated my newest pointillist piece last night.. damest thing the point just breaks after a few dotts!.. luckily I had a replacement ( my last) got to be x-tra careful.. dam things aren't cheap.
Looking foward to the release of the NEW "Guild Wars Book!!", lots of great art by some fine artists.Would love to see the movie "9", from the previews looks like a madd flick.
Now to the art posted, an oldie.. from way back when they announced they were making a "wolvie" flick... not that I like the character.. just wanted to x-periment wth some cg art, so thats the reasonit doesn't follow my usual style... just went crazy wth it.

Balor of the Evil Eye

Another drawing just for sh##s & giggles. Got the inspiration for this piece from an illustration by the great Barry Windsor Smith titled "Sir Launcelot".
According to the legends of the Irish mythology, Balor,of the Evil Eye was a king of the Fomorians, a race of giants.Balor was notable for his one eye, which could kill anyone it looked upon.
I decided not to got with the giant theme, just making him a fearful king, kept the eye thing, just barely illustrating it beneath the helmet.
Again went crazy with the chainmail, dam stuff drives the ole kros eyes loopy, but figured if I went with the bearded face ..it would resemble Mr. Smiths too closely.
Apologies for the lousy photo.

Re-arranging my studio is a real pain in the A**. No room to walk on the floor, tables full of stuff.. my buddy (da cat named "wakee") took a peek & went the other way. :(
Have a sketch on the table somewhere that I wanted to flesh out, another chainmail figure, but as things are willy-nilly, don't figure I'll get to it tonight :(
But wanted to share an illustration by an artist that "is" my inspiration... Mr Virgil Finlay,
I think the title is "I Can't Wear White"(least that's what I have listed in my cd archive) , & can't say what mag it was published in.
Would love to see one of his originals!.. maybe someday ...

I Walk With the Angel of Death

Just finished up this commission this morning, for a Marine.
About the piece, he wished to have the grim reaper, but I felt that it would just add black directly behind the Marine, so I went withe the" Angel of Death", whose wings a black mist frame the warrior.
Now most if not all of you think that the pik signifies the Marine will “buy it” but not so.. if I could afford a scanner you would see that there is a fine white halo around our Marine, meaning he is not the target of the “Angel”.

The Secret Wooded Spot

Created this piece in photoshop about a month ago(to brush up on my color, no pun intended) using the natural brushes in various sizes , with some texture added here & there.

Not my usual subject matter, but a conversation with my son about a secret wooded spot that I found in my younger ramblings inspired this piece. Pretty content with it, maybe colors are a bit too bold, but after a photoshop session my brain is pretty baked ,and I leave the piece as is.

Well finally finished up that pointillist piece that I’ve been yammering about “what seems like forever. I can tell ya I was a lil nervous stepping into this one.. my first portrait style art.

But ,I’m x-treemly happy with how it came out & those that got a sneek preview were flawed. I’m pretty confident that I can do portraits when the need arises.( nooo, this is not an actual portrait)

Didn't like how it came out,(way to much white)..was thinking of doing it in pointillism , but at time was'nt too confident in my ability to do vechicles, so I added some color with photo shop..I think it looks better

Started this art piece the same time as the pointillist piece I'm currently working on ( dam those dotts! ).

Some of the larger black areas had to be filled in with an old "Hunt Manuscript Roundpoint #65" as my brush bought the farm... think my cat got to it ( lil b@$**?^ ), not to mention those dam blades of elephant grass, so it took me forever to finish it up . Thanks for stopping in & taking a peek.

Just finished up my latest piece ..a commission on a 15x20 watercolor paper, in pen & ink in pointillism.
This piece was a real challenge.reason being I usually work with a 00(.30) koh-i-noor pen.But my luck she hit the floor ..cap off :(
So my next choice were the pens I been saving for who knows what( really fear as they are tempermental),6x0(.13) & 4x0(.18).
These pens produce the smallest dott..so buildilng up the various greys & blending them were maddening.
Worked on this piece day & night(can't recall how many days or hours)quitting when the migrains got too bad. Hope you enjoy.. me I'm off to take some meds & a nap.

I've included a detail photo of the pilot-canopy area compared to a 2 center meter candy to show you the dott & maddening detail.

Well heres the piece that took me forever, what with chores ,house inspecting etc. Drawing was done 3 times, the link armor was in more detail ..but had to scrap that as the gloe from the grail would blur alot of the links, then I had the nova with too many lines. so had to reduce them..finding the right amount of rays was a pain.

Remembering Granpa-Joe

My latest piece is honoring my grandfather. He served during WWII & took part in the Normandy invasion with the 116th Infantry 29 Div.

Granpa-Joe would sit quiet by the front door in his delapadated rocker... I would run around my grandparents house doing the usual kid shtuff & stop in front of him staring ,to see if I could get a responce..nothing..but when the mood hit him , he would snag me up & tell me his experiances during the war. His stories generated fear ,pride, anger,tears ..all from me .. but he showed no emotion.. his usual ending was "wars no good boy.. but sometimes it's necessary".

Other kids in the fifties had baseball heroes, mine were & still are the heroes of WWII.

Been some time since my last post & you have my apologies.Been pretty hectic here ..with moving my studio around ..trying to heat it.. & finally moving to another more comfortable location.

well have'nt posted much... but been pretty busy.. trying to winterize my studio..a job thats seems fruitless. Got my art package out today .. still working on my new piece..slooooooow but it's lookin good (so far)

Well been some time.. as the title says still working .. only slower..hey i'm getting older & its winter... & pointillism "SUCKS".....yadayadayada... so off to just some ramblings
Enjoyed the new Hellboy"Chapel of Moloch" written & drawn by my fav artist Mike Mignola.
Hear alot of people complaing that he doesn't illustrate more Hellboy comics... miss his art too .. but I look at it like this... takes alot of thought to layout a page .. then draw it.. only to find that it just don't work.. so off you go again to redraw it..when you finally got it then you ink it ... same goes for the cover.. and all the other covers that he creates... plus writing & rewriting etc... shit I can cut him some slack for not illustrating a monthly...semi monthly comic.. ah well just my rant.

Well just finished up the piece I was working on for the hellboard art exchange Christmas event.
Not sure I can post it .. as its a gift ..& guess you wouldn't want the person whos recieving it see their gift.. at least I think thats how it works.... but will post as soon as I'm able.

Finally got the two books I've been looking foward to since I heard they were being published..bothe by my fav comic co.Dark Horse.
The loooooooong awaited "Hellboy" comic fully illustrated by my fav artist "Mike Mignola".
Next,Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" illustrated by "Berin Wrightson".. they done a fine job on this book & if ya love the ole classic pen & ink illustration (as I am) then go get this book... & a great price !!

Still at the ole drawing table ...so far pretty pleased with my current piece.Figure I have one more black & white piece to do before I tackle the pointillism.
Froze my butt off up in the attic last nite( thats my studio)...will have to find room to hook up the heater again.Got the heat going down in the house.....uugh hate winter.

well heres the latest piece... took some time (about a yr 1/2 pencil stage off & on).
reason for the procrastination.. wasnt confident in fmy artistic talent for full picture (versus) my portrait style type of art.
Know you'll see some Franklin Booth influencs in there ( as he is one of my fav pen & ink illustrators), but the piece was really inspired by a wrk by Barry Windsor Smith that I seen on the internet(which I can't locate now) don't recall the title but it ha a ghost walking thru some woods.
